Straight from the tin, it has a smooth, sticky consistency that spreads easily and blends into hot liquids without lumps. It's a storecupboard staple for classic bakes. Use it to make banoffee pie, millionaire's shortbread or a batch of fudge, or stir it into rice pudding for extra creaminess. A spoonful also sweetens tea or coffee, and it works well drizzled over pancakes or added to homemade ice cream mixtures. For caramel-style toffee, simmer the unopened tin gently in a pan of water, keeping it fully submerged, then leave to cool before opening. Once opened, spoon any leftover milk into a sealed container, keep it in the fridge and use within a few days. Give it a good stir before using again, as it may thicken slightly on standing. Keep the unopened tin in a cool, dry cupboard away from direct sunlight. Shake or stir before use to ensure an even consistency, especially if it has been stored for a while.
